How to sign a PDF on iPhone

Open the PDF, tap Markup, tap + and Add Signature, and sign with your finger. It's built into the iPhone and costs nothing. Below: the steps, a quicker way if you sign forms often, and when a drawn signature isn't enough.

With what's already on your iPhone

  1. Open the PDF. In Mail, tap the attachment; otherwise find it in the Files app. If you're asked to open it in Files, tap Save first.
  2. Tap the Markup button (the pen tip).
  3. Tap +, then Add Signature. Sign with your finger and tap Done.
  4. Drag the signature into place. Drag the blue dots to resize it.
  5. Tap Done and send the PDF with Mail, Messages or AirDrop.

Quicker with Udfyld

  1. In Mail, tap the attachment, tap Share and choose Udfyld.
  2. Tap Sign. The first time, you draw your signature. It's stored only in your iPhone's Keychain.
  3. Tap where the signature goes, and resize it if needed. Initials, the date and a tick are one tap each.
  4. Save. Udfyld saves a copy, so the original stays as it was, and you send it straight from the share sheet.

Is a drawn signature enough?

A drawn signature is a picture of your signature on the page. For most everyday forms that's exactly what's asked for: sign-up sheets, consent forms and forms from school, clubs and landlords.

Some documents need a digital signature tied to your identity instead, such as a qualified electronic signature or one made with a national e-ID. Then the sender usually emails you a link to their signing service, and you sign there. Neither Markup nor Udfyld can make that kind of signature. If you're not sure, ask the sender what they accept.

Tips

  • Fill in first, sign last. Then the signature ends up on the finished version.
  • The recipient can't see what you typed? Some PDF readers don't show text in form fields. Turn on Lock the fields when you save in Udfyld, and the text becomes part of the page.
  • Too big to email? Udfyld can make scanned pages smaller before you send. Pages with text stay sharp.
